The fact that Québécois artists covered a lot of French songs is already well known.This case is no exception but the outcome seems to have been.Renée Martel had a huge hit with this song in Québec where as Christine Nérac's French version seems to have not made a big impact (at least not until it appeared on the Pop! Pop! Pigalle compilation).

Special re-post for Kate.Laura Ulmer made 3 French ep's and 4 Canadian singles and an album.She was the daughter of Danish born Georges Ulmer who became a famous cartoonist,singer and actor when he moved to France in the early 40's .
Like her father,Laura also became a singer and she even appeared in a few movies.This is from her last (1967) Canadian single.

Les Surfs,4 brothers and 2 sisters ( Rocky,Coco,Dave,Pat,Monique and Nicole) from a family of 12 children (les Rabaraona) were born in Madagascar.Making their first appearances under the name "Rabaraona frères et soeurs",they won first prize in an amateur singing contest organized by national radio station "Radio Tananarive" by doing 2 of The Platter's greatest hits "Only you" et "The great pretender".After this success the goup toured Madagascar under the name of "Les Béryl".They also recorded their first record in Tananarive (Petite fleur,Marin and Les trois cloches).At the demand of the French goverment they were chosen to represent Madagascar at the opening ceremony of the second French television station in Paris in september 1963 and from their first appearance there the French audience were in love with them (the fact that they were so small,average height of the group was between 1,43 and 1,55 meters,must have endeared them as much as their music).They got a record-deal from French label Festival and from then on were called LES SURFS.Their first European record was released in september 1963 during their first tour in France with Sheila and Frank Alamo. Their song "Reviens vite et oublie",a French-language version of "Be my baby",stayed in the top of the hit-parade for 3 months in France,Spain and Mexico (Spanish version).In 1964 after having performed at the Olympia in Paris (Les idoles des jeunes),Les Surfs were declared revelation of the year.The folowing years they toured all over the world and appeared on many television shows in the company of the biggest names.They recorded songs in French,Italian,Spanish,English and German.They also appeared in 2 movies:"Cherchez l'idole" with Frank Fernandel and Dany Saval, and "Le dernier tiercé" with Dario Moreno and Odile Versois.In 1971,after a long tour,Les Surfs split up.Today the four brothers live in Montréal,Canada (only Rocky is still performing),the sisters have sadly passed away.And now for a nice international mix of some rarer tracks... The influence of the fab four was enormous on the Québec music scene so it was no surprise Les Beatlettes were formed.An all-girl group who didn't really sound like The Beatles.For more info on them and a few more songs I suggest you check out the excellent post at dans mon café.

Following the split-up of Les Beatlettes (due to a car-crash claiming two of the original member's lives) at the end of 1965,Claire Fugère decided to form another group called Les Guerrières (great name if you ask me),the group showed great potential but sadly only recorded one 45 and split up at the end of 1966.Shortly after Claire and 2 other Guerrières reformed Les Beatlettes.Check out their France Gall cover... Québécois girl-group Les 4 copines released one single "Qui les filles/Il a le truc" in 1964.Incidentally the same songs were released in France by French girl-group Les Gam's also in 1964.Now who covered who? Of what I've heard of both I must say I prefer Les 4 Copines.

Freddy from Germany solved the mystery! "Very interesting post but,sorry Bruno,Version II is not France.It's Charlotte Marian,published on Tempo-Records (No.: Tempo 1016). Charlotte just tried to imitate a french accent to sound like France.
In the 60s,Tempo was a well known record company in germany.They recorded popular songs using unknown artists. Tempo singles were sold half the price than the original.Charlotte Marian (real Name Charlotte Bruhn) was married to Christian Bruhn, the composer of "Ein bisschen Goethe ..."".Thanks for the info Freddy!

Just checked my mail and ..."Yes it's Charlotte Marian but her real name is...Katja Bischoff (°16.2.1937 Obernburg).Under this alias she recorded several records for the Teeny record label,the Tempo record-label in Germany.Katja Bischoff was also one of the 3 Sweetles,known from "Ich wünsch mir zum Geburtstag einen Beatle".The other 2 members of The Sweetles were Tina Rainford and Monika Grimm." When a very young Cris Carol won "Les Relais de la musique Française",3 record-labels wanted to sign her (Pathé,Philips and Festival).She ended up signing with Festival,who decided to start her out as a yé-yé singer.When Festival went bankrupt (after releasing 2 ep's by her),she signed a contract with Pathé who released a further 3? ep's.After that it seems she grew tired of the yé-yé scene and she concentrated on writing songs for other artists,most notably Chantal Kelly.

What's better than 1 yé-yé girl? Two! And what's even better? Twins! The German born Kessler Twins (well-known as star dancers in the Paris Lido by the late 50's) became a sensation when they moved to Italy in the early 60's and started recording there.They performed all over the world and still do in Germany.If there's interest I'll consider doing a special on them since not much seems to available in English...Watch them dance and sing "Quando quando" (scopitone) here,turn up loud!

Schlocker is 1 year old (give or take a few days and yes I know I got a bit carried away with the candles).I don't know exactly because in a crazy mood I wanted to quit last November and deleted all the older posts.I'm glad I didn't! :) Once more I'd like to thank all those who were an inspiration for this blog:spiked candy,blowupdoll,filles sourires and retro babe! "Vanusa (Vanusa Santos Flores),singer and composer,was born in Cruzeiro,SP,on September 22,1947.She was raised in Uberaba and Frutal,MG,where she studied guitar and when she was 16 started out to sing, and she worked as a crooner with a band called Golden Lions.Singing in ballrooms in many cities in Minas Gerais state she was discovered by Sidney Carvalho,who was working for Prosperi,Magaldi & Maia,a publicity agency.Going to São Paulo,SP,she was launched as the new Wanderléia, then the most famous young girl singer.In 1966, at the peak of Jovem Guarda movement,she started on the TV show O Bom, hosted by Eduardo Araújo,in TV Excelsior network.She signed a contract with RCA Victor and got a hit with ‘Pra Nunca Mais Chorar’ (Carlos Imperial and Eduardo Araújo)."After that first single her recording career seems to have been launched.(Big thanks to Refer for the translation from Portuguese) According to Refer: "Vanusa was one of few 'yé yé girl' in Brazil. She was part of jovem guarda movement in the 60s, along with other 'yé yé girls' such as Silvinha, Nalva Aguiar and Waldirene.The earlier 60s' Vanusa career was inspired on Sylvie Vartan for sure.She tried hard to look like Sylvie (that was virtually unknown here) on the hair style, dressing etc.She even recorded 'Irresistiblement' in Portuguese.In the middle seventies she emerged as a 'serious' singer in the Elis Regina's vein. And what a good surprising job she did! I even recommend Loronix to post a couple of her 70s albums as fine Brazilian music.She still performs till today." Check out one-hit? wonder Brigitte (probably named after BB,for which the song was originally meant ) with this pretty rare Italian version of "Je t'aime moi non plus",this single was a promo copy not for sale included in Italian erotic NEW KING magazine somewhere in 1968.Reportedly it was not officially released because it was deamed obscene...
In any case it makes a far more naughty listen than the original Italian cover (by Giorgio Albertazzi and Anna Proclemer).(Big thanks to Italianbeat)

Mexican yé-yé girl Julissa (Julia Elisa Del Llano Macedo) debuted with rock-group Los Spitfires (formed by her brother) when she was 14.At that time it was the only rock-group in Mexico with a female singer.After playing in a radio contest,the group won second place and a chance to make a record for CBS.Between 1963 and 1964 Julissa recorded 3 lp's for CBS,as well as some tv soap opera themes.Julissa also acted in the theatre,tv and the movies (amongst them 2 horror movies with Boris Karloff!).She also produced and directed several tv shows and theatre plays (The unofficial Mexican Rocky Horror Show!).She continues to be a very big influence on Mexican tv to this day.

Born in Angers,French yé-yé girl/rocker Evy (Evelyne Verrechia) recorded her first ep in 1963.Her first ep's were typical yé-yé but she loved rock 'n' roll and could be found very often at the Golf Drouot,the Paris rock 'n' roll temple.Her rock sound made her very popular on "Salut les copains".She also paid hommage to Elvis with a cover of "Ain't that lovin' you baby","Quel merveilleux souvenir Johnny".Evy wrote almost all her own lyrics and became a very energetic rocker with a strong voice and some clever arrangements.She opened for The Who,The Kinks,The Rolling Stones,The Beatles and The Animals."I never felt stage-fright,I am,what it’s called “a stage animal!“ Stage is home to me! In the 60’s the audiences would throw all kinds of vegetables on stage,specially tomatoes,and eggs,or whistle you off…That never happened to me,on the contrary,they would throw me little dolls, fluffies or flowers".The labels Barclay/Rivièra released 5 singles and ep's in France and 2 in Canada.She had already recorded a single in Italian (on Messaggerie Musicale) with famous French composer Ivan Jullien and performed in Italy "I made my first TV show in Italy at Campione d’Italia with Gianni Ravera,in 1965,dressed Mary Quant,I wore the first mini-skirt in the Italien TV and received Gina Lollobriggida’s compliments",when she and her family (who were Italian) moved to Rome.There she made 2 more singles in Italian (both RCA),one of them "Domani il mondo sarà nelle nostre mani" produced by her brother Albert and accompanied by his group "Les Lemons".She moved to London in 1969 (what a girl!) and over there continued to work with the top musicians.Nowadays Evy is what we call a real cosmopolite (citizen of the world) and she keeps recording and performing it seems! As requested something by Italian girl-group Le Mini Coopers,Italianbeat told me "one of the better Italian girl-groups of the 60's,I have never heard them and I'm Italian!".This comes from the ultra-rare single pictured on the left.A typical generic picture sleeve was used (I've found not one picture of this group) and the single has 2 different artists on each side "Le Mini Coopers: Mi abituerò/Barbarella:Sentimento".Both artists have nothing to do with each other.It was released in 1968 which seems a bit odd since the song by Le Mini Coopers sounds a lot earlier...it also sounds surprisingly fresh.

Alice Dona,a most jazzy yé-yé girl,recorded her first single when she was almost 17 in 1963 "Mon train de banlieue - Demain,j’ai dix sept ans".She composed and sometimes wrote her own songs.Her songs were also interpreted by a whole bunch of other artists,most notably French singer Serge Lama with whom she also collaborated on songs for a while.Between 1963 and 1964 Alice made six superb singles and ep's.She also recorded in Italian sometimes.The ep pictured on the left seems to be the most sought after,her other ep's and singles can be found relatively cheap.She performed for the first time at the Olympia in Paris in 1963.In 1965 she married Bernard Ricci,singer of "Les Célibataires" (I guess that group had to change their name!).In 1967 the fact that Alice was pregnant stopped her from performing and recording for a while,and she decided to write songs for other artists instead.By the early 70's she was back.She still performs and records to this day.(Big thanks to 60-one)

Lots of work this week,so only a short update for now,more soon! In contrast to Spanish and French yé-yé singers I've found there seems to be very little information about Italian yé-yé girls and girl-groups available.People who own the great "Arriva la bomba" compilation will certainly remember Brunetta (together with The Balubas) of the memorable "Baluba shake",curious enough this song actually became a hit amongst the mods in late 60's England.The second song featured here is the b-side of this great 1966-67? single and this one strangely reminds me of a song by Spanish singer Karina...I've heard rumors Brunetta was considered the anti-Caterina Caselli in that time,not unlike Stella was considered the anti-Sheila in France.There is a rather pricey Italian cd compilation available called "Shake".If somebody has anymore info on her please let me know,greatly appreciated! :)

Can't tell you a lot about Gaynaël except that she released 2 singles on CBS and seems to have been in the habit of writing her own music.The lyrics for this song were written by the legendary Frank Gérald who wrote for about every singer in France.Amongst his huge credits list we find Bardot's "Fille de paille",Françoise Hardy's "Le premier bonheur du jour" and several songs by Les Parisiennes to name a few.This one's supposed to be from around 68.

Meet The Girls,the only all-girl group during the 60's in Greece.They only put out one record "Rocket for girls/Hello Beethoven".(Sadly I can find no picture of this group)

"Zoitsa "Zoe" Kouroukli is one of the Greek singers that roamed the Greek music scene in the sixties. In 1959 Miss Kouroukli started out as the candidate for Greece in the election of the “Miss Universe" contest. Although she did make it into the semi-finals, the big prize that year went to her Japanese opponent.During her musical career that followed, Zoe regularly performed in local venues, and apart from releasing several songs on her own, she also played together with various Greek bands of the time, like The Minis and The Stormies." Singaporean yé-yé girl Lara used to be backed by The Trailers,not sure if she's here as the record not clearly states it.She seems to have made several ep's (with The Trailers as well as solo).As modcentric pointed out,it seems Nancy Sinatra's music was a strong influence among a lot of asian singers in the 60's, so that would explain this one.Seems her records are extremely rare (foreign collectors bought them all?).

Incredibly Kirsti's whole career seems to be focused around the Eurovision song-contest.She entered the Norwegian pre-selection in 65,66,67,68,69,72,74 and 77 either alone or in collaboration with other musicians.She represented Norway on the Eurovision song-contest in 65,67,68 (collaboration) and 69 but never won.Besides from that only two singles where released by her in Norway (66 with The Vanguards/69 with Benny Borg) but she released at least 9 singles in Germany (sung in German) where she was pretty big and she also released several albums in Norway,and now thanks to Dan we can enjoy some of her non-Eurovision songs.(ysi links)

Karina was born Maribel Llaudes Santiago on December 4, 1945 in the Andalusian town of Jaén.She made her recording debut as Maribel Llaudes in 1961 with two unsuccessful covers of songs chosen from that year's Festival De La Canción De Benidorm.When the newly-christened Karina released her first 4-song EP on the Hispavox label in 1963, Spain was blessed with a new teenaged superstar-unquestionably the queen of Spanish Ye-Yé,and much-idolized for her blond hair and baby-faced good looks.Like French Ye-Yé favorite,Sylvie Vartan,Karina's early EPs (1963-1966) contained mostly lightweight cover- songs like John Barry's "Goldfinger",Serge Gainsbourg's "Oh Oh Sheriff",and Bacharach-David's "Always Something There To Remind Me".It was Karina's version of an Alberto Cortez song called "Me Lo Dijo Pérez" that took home the 1st prize at the Festival De La Canción De Mallorca in 1965.Not much of a surprise considering the lyrics of "Me Lo Dijo Pérez" read like a tourism ad for the town of Palma De Mallorca (the joys of splashing in the ocean/the never-ending parties in wonderful Mallorca).At the height of Karina's fame, she couldn't even go out shopping in Spain for fear of being mobbed by fans,and had to resort to traveling to London to buy her clothes.By the latter half of the sixties Karina no longer relied on cover versions for hits and worked with Spanish songwriters on chart-toppers like "El Baúl De Los Recuerdos" (1969), and "Colores" (1970).Karina's participation in the 1970 Spanish TV special Pasaporte A Dublín,a song contest that served as a warm-up to the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest,won her second place with the beautiful ballad,"En Un Mundo Nuevo".Karina married the composer of ""En Un Mundo Nuevo",a songwriter named Tony Luz who played guitar in a popular rock'n roll band called Los Pekinekes.Karina went through husbands like Liz Taylor,and rumor has it that she was married a total of seven times.After her quick split with Tony Luz, she took off to Bali and then returned to her hometown of Jaén soon after.Her last recording for Spanish label Hispavox was in 1977,but in the early eighties she made a minor comeback with some hit releases in Mexico.Karina recently made an appearance on the 2003 Spanish TV series Vivo Cantando where she competed against a line-up of contemporary Spanish pop stars.Welcomed back by a wildly enthusiastic audience,Karina broke down in tears after receiving the most national phone-in votes when she sang two of her biggest hits - "Romeo Y Julieta" and "En Un Mundo Nuevo".(adapted from the article at cha cha charming magazine by Lex Marsh) Big thanks to John Jhon from Spain for the songs!

The Javalins
In 1960,the Dutch-Indonesian band "Hurricane Rollers" changed their name to "Strangers","Crazy Strangers" and then "Javalins".This name was chosen because most of the group were born in Java.The almost exclusively instrumental group recorded mostly in Germany.The Javalins only played 2 times in The Netherlands during the 60's.In Germany and Scandinavia they were much more famous.There records were recorded and they played to crowds of thousands.The Javalins consisted of Franky Franken (singer-guitar), Robby Latuperisa (drums), Hans Bax (guitar), Peter Theunissen (bass) and Gerard Buskop (piano-organ).Their "Al Capone" remains one of the finest examples of Dutch-Indonesian rock 'n' roll.The group had a reunion in 1981 with Frank Luyten instead of Franky Franken.Later The Javalins also did a few concerts with their original singer.Sadly Franky Franken died on 15 september 1998.Since then no plans for further concerts were made.

Around 1963 The Javalins combined their musical talents with those of German girl-group (The) Crazy Girls.Freddy from Germany (thanks Freddy!) contacted me via get hip! and got me this info (and a picture!) "The Crazy Girls didn't get very popular in Germany.They were a studio-group produced by Paul Kuhn (who was also producer of the Javalins).Officially the Crazy Girls consisted of: Rosi Rohr, Grit (or Gretel) Kästel and Ans Plevier (actually Dutch), all three were Members of the "Bhoto-Lucas-Chor".On some recordings Ans Plevier was replaced by Leonie Brückner.These girls didn't get famous,you won't find much information about them on the internet.But they were members of different other groups,which got great succes,the Bhoto-Lucas-Chor,Günther-Kallmann-Chor,die Sunshines and much more.They also did solo recordings,under different aliases".
Here's the discography of this super-team.Note they even had a 45 released in the USA!

Rita Pavone was born in Turin in 1945 to family impoverished after the war.At a very young age,she worked as a seamstress for a meager 50 Swiss francs a week.Rita Pavone was little,but she had big dreams of becoming a famous singer.By 15,she had already won the "Festa degli Sconosciuti" talent contest for undiscovered young artists in Ariccia, near Rome.The organizer (and her later husband) Teddy Reno gave her the opportunity of a lifetime when he brought her to Rome's prestigious studios. With her small size and young age,she was an instant hit.She quickly rose to the top of the charts and in 1965 she was invited to appear on the leading American music show, the Ed Sullivan Show. She recorded hit after hit,in particular "Bye Bye Blue Jeans" in 1964 and "Arrivederci Hans" in 1968.In the late sixties,she performed at New York's Carnegie Hall and the Olympia in Paris.She sang throughout Europe,especially in Berlin where she was nicknamed the littlest singer of schlager in the world. Born in Prague,it all started for Helena when on April 27 1964 she won the song contest "We are searching for new talents" with the G. Gershwin Song "The Man I Love".She was given a record contract and recorded several singles between 64 and 69.Then her first album was released.She was also (and still is) pretty big in Germany,she records and performs to this day.This is from one of her first singles (pictured on the left).

Tunesian born Jacqueline composed her first songs aged 12 and recorded her first disc "7 heures du matin" for Impact records when she was 18. Her songs combined Arab, European and American influences.Her sixties ep's are highly prized for their garage sound.With her strong vocals, and talent for pop melodies, Jaqueline's songs are real gems that still sound fresh today.She still records and performs to this day.

Pretty rare original version (and video from the tv show) of this song,it also appeared recently on a Sylvie Vartan compilation (in a slighty different version).Penned by Gainsbourg at the request of Vartan who wanted to do some duets for tv,but who he doubted would sing any of his songs since "she wasn't that kind of girl",it became a trio with Birkin and got televised in the Carpentier show in 1972.Gainsbourg was very pleased Vartan didn't ask him to change any lyrics! I can only say bravo to Serge for penning this...

In 2003,Universal released the number 5 of the anthology Pop à Paris.It's with surprise that one heard France Gall sing an unreleased track written by Serge Gainsbourg in 1967,"Bloody Jack",with the same music and arrangements as the Gainsbourg penned "Teenie Weenie Boppie" released in the same year.The lyrics of this "Bloody Jack" are the same as those of the Gainsbourg version (released 1968 with different music).

Little seems to be known about these yé-yé girls...Cosette wrote both the lyrics and music of her songs.The style is folk-rock beatnik,influenced by one of France's music heroes,Antoine.Although she is generally considered a "one-ep" wonder,she also seems to have made a "religious" ep in the late 60's.Jacqueline Perez was an actress as well as a singer,she released at least 3 ep's and a single.

No it's not Batman and Robin but Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa! These guys started off in the fifties as "The Dinamic Boys" but since a radio-presenter couldn't pronounce their name in English and just called them "Dúo Dinámico",they've called themselves that way ever since.They had an amazing career from 1959 till 1973 and then from 1986 till 2001! On the right you can see them having fun with Massiel at the 1968 Eurovision song-festival! Here are some nice pants-swingers for you all.I've also included a very funny videoclip (check out their Beatle-wigs and sounds!) of the boys performing "Volver el rock" from their 1968 Spanish movie "Una chica para dos".
